Coash's effort pitches Canyon forward
Senior left-hander Jake Coash pitched a complete-game one-hitter Friday, yielding just one earned run with 10 strikeouts and no walks to lead visiting Canyon of Santa Clarita to a 4-1 victory over third-seeded Canyon of Anaheim in Southern Section Divison II quarterfinal.
Leading 2-1 in the seventh inning, Sergio Almanzar came through in the clutch with a two-out, two-run single to give the Cowboys some breathing room. They'll play host to Mission Viejo in the semifinals on Tuesday.
The third-seeded Cowboys (23-5) got on the board early when Ryan Burke's pop-fly single to right field scored Ryan Pipho. Josh Schrek (2-3) hit a solo home run in the fourth-inning, giving the Cowboys a 2-1 lead.
The Comanches (17-12) scored their lone run and got their lone hit in the fourth inning. Cleanup Mark Polizzi reached base on one of Burke's two errors. Polizzi then stole second and moved to third when catcher Justin Schartz's throw sailed into center field after two Coash strikeouts. Chris Morinello came up with his team's only hit to score Polizzi.
Anthony Duarte, Garret Green and Brent Spirnak went a combined 0 for 8 with six strikeouts for the Comanches. Vinnie Pestano went the distance for Canyon of Anaheim. He gave up four runs and six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
