The-Signal

Sunday February 18, 2007

ALISO VIEJO - If the Canyon girls basketball team is going to return to the CIF-Southern Section Division I-A title game, it will have to do it in similar fashion to last season.

Step one was accomplished Saturday night, some 90 miles away from Canyon Country, with a 67-61 victory against Aliso Niguel High.

 The Signal 1/18/07

Canyon and Valencia girls basketball took care of business Tuesday.

Now they're ready for one of the Foothill League's biggest showdowns of the year on Friday.

The Canyon-Valencia matchups this season should be crucial postseason jockeying games. Hart is still the favorite so if everything falls in line, the Cowboys and Vikings are playing for the second playoff spot in a highly respected Foothill League.

Bringing the Heat

The Signal

Sunday January 14, 2007

For two quarters, they couldn't score. They couldn't grab a defensive rebound. They couldn't defend anybody in the post.

But after scoring just six first-quarter points and trailing by one point at halftime, the Canyon girls basketball team fixed all of these things.

The Cowboys picked up the defensive pressure, tightened up on the glass and the rest was easy as they exploded for a 52-34 victory over Chatsworth in the Ladies New Year's Ball at College of the Canyons.

FROM THE 2005-06 SEASON

Destiny Rides to Finals

Christina Hall's 3-pointer late in OT sends the Canyon girls to CIF-SS Division I-A title game.

Call it fate.

Call it a cosmic sense of redemption.

Call it divine intervention.

Call it what you want, just call it for the Cowboys.

The unseeded Canyon girls basketball team, on the strength of a redemptive 3-pointer from Christina Hall with 11 seconds left in overtime, posted a 56-55 win over sixth-seeded J.W. North of Riverside Tuesday in the semifinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division I-A playoffs at Valencia High.

For the first time in school history, Canyon (23-7) is going to the section finals, which will unfold Saturday at the Long Beach Pyramid against none other than Foothill League rival Hart.

Canyon Looks to Continue Upsets

Cinderella should have been home by midnight.

Canyon girls basketball head coach Stan Delus believes in staying out late.

I’m not really worried about midnight,” he said. “If I were worried about midnight, I would have been worried two weeks ago. We’ve pushed the limits on this.”

The Cowboys (22-7) intend to push the limits even further when again they are underdogs against J.W. North High of Riverside (24-6) tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Valencia High in the CIF-Southern Section Division I-A semifinals.

Rusty Cowboys Rustle Up a Win

Canyon girls basketball stumbles early before pinning lopsided defeat on visiting Harvard Westlake.

Chalk it up to perhaps a little too much holiday cheer.

The Canyon girls basketball team put away Harvard Westlake, but not before showing some rust in the early going and struggling to find a rhythm.

Canyon senior co-captain Brittany Thomas grabbed her teammates by their bootstraps, pouring in a game-high 18 points and pulling down 20 rebounds to lead the Cowboys

Canyon Girls Look Impressive

Cowboy junior Nicole Leon enters zone, drops 29 points on Chaminade in Canyon victory.

Canyon’s Nicole Leon had that look in her eyes.

It was the kind of look that conveys a message: “I can score anytime I want, and there’s nothing you can do to stop me.”

Leon registered 29 points in leading the Canyon girls basketball team to a 61-45 victory over the Mission League’s Chaminade High Saturday night at Cowboy Gymnasium
