A Guide for Parents, Counselors & Students

College of the Canyons has a special program that allows students to take college classes while they are still attending high school. This program, called “Concurrent Enrollment,” is available to students from public and private high schools. It is a great opportunity for students to jumpstart their college educations.

Another great option for Hart District high school students is enrollment in our middle college high school, Academy of the Canyons, located on the COC campus. AOC students take part of their classes on the AOC campus and the remainder of their classes at COC. AOC students receive priority registration over all other high school and college students, virtually guaranteeing enrollment in the college classes of their choice. For more information please visit www.academyofthecanyons.com.

The great news is that College of the Canyons waives enrollment fees for high school students who participate in concurrent enrollment. Students do have to buy their own textbooks and supplies, and pay other mandatory fees such as the health fee. They also may want to buy a parking permit. However, the main enrollment fees are waived.

Concurrent enrollment is a smart choice because it makes higher education available at a place where an excellent education is convenient and affordable. This is particularly valuable for students who don't want to wait until they graduate from high school to begin taking college-level transfer courses or occupational certificate classes.

At the high school:

Step #1
Students should start the process by visiting their high school guidance counselor to discuss which specific courses to take. Some courses can earn dual credit at both the high school and the college.

Step #2
The counselors should provide the students with two forms, which need to be completed and signed. The first is a Concurrent Enrollment form and the second is a Consent to Medical Treatment or Counseling of Minors form.

Step #3
The student’s parents or guardians need to sign both forms.

Step #4
The high school counselor AND the high school principal need to sign the Concurrent Enrollment form.

At College of the Canyons
The enrollment process at COC should start after the steps at the high school are complete.

Step #5
After both forms are signed, the student should bring them to the Admissions Office in the A-building at College of the Canyons.

Step #6
The student should pick up, fill out and submit an application form. The application form and the two other forms should be turned in at the same time.

Step #7
The student needs to take COC’s computerized Placement Tests in the campus Testing Center, room I-205. These tests in reading, writing and math assess the level a student should take in English and mathematics. The tests are available on a walk-in basis during regularly scheduled testing hours. The Admissions Office can provide the hours. The student should allow 2 hours to take the tests.

Step #8
After taking the tests, the student may sign up for a New Student Orientation.

Students only need to be tested and to take orientation once, so after the first semester of concurrent enrollment work, they don’t have to repeat steps 3 & 4. If they take consecutive semesters of courses, they don’t need to apply again either.

Step #9
At the end of Orientation, students are given a date to register.

Step #10
On the registration date, concurrent enrollment students register in person in the Admissions Office.

Concurrent Enrollment is open to students in grades 11 and 12. Students in grades K through the 10th grade are known as “Special Admit” applicants. They can also take advantage of the program, but they most follow three extra steps.

Extra steps for Special Admit Students (Grades K-10)

Step #1
Special Admit students must complete all the previous steps for the high school and college, but submit the paperwork to the college with the parents or guardians present.

Step #2
Special Admit students need to have an “Underage Admission” interview with an Admissions & Records Office staff member.

Step #3
Special Admit students must obtain a permission signature from the instructors for all classes the student wants to attend.
