TECHNOLOGY


TECHNOLOGY FUNDAMENTALS Grade 9
Prerequisite: No prerequisites
This course introduces students to basic keyboarding skills and the use of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Power Point. Internet searches and basic web page development are included as well. Required of all ninth graders.2.5 Credits


COMPUTER APPLICATIONS Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Technology Foundations
Computer Applications is a course designed to help develop the fundamentals of MS Office 2002 using Windows 98 as the operating system. MS Office 2002 consists of the applications using Word, Excel and PowerPoint. It will acquaint you with the proper way to solve word-processing problems, illustrate practical applications and presentations. This is an individualized and a team based program.5 Credits


ACCOUNTING I Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Students should be proficient in basic arithmetic .
This course is beneficial to students who: anticipate owning their own business or entering the business world, or plan on pursuing a business major in college. This course is also beneficial to anyone who desires to learn how to keep personal financial records. A full-year course designed to introduce students to accounting methods and practices and the complete accounting cycle including a brief introduction to computerized accounting.5 Credits


ACCOUNTING II Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Accounting I
A second semester of accounting is offered as an extension of the Accounting course. The course introduces additional topics involving more complex accounting applications and significantly extends the basic accounting concepts and skills.5 Credits


MARKETING I / II Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Accounting I
This course involves the management and analysis of marketing strategy, the application of the appropriate decision techniques in developing the overall marketing mix and in solving marketing problems. Topics include advertising, communications, promotional strategies, public relations and publicity, consumer behavior and business ethics. The course combines problem-solving instruction, speakers from the community, and hands-on projects utilizing computer applications, and community problem solving. 10 Credits

COMPUTER ASSISTED DRAFTING A (CAD) Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra A or higher and Technology Foundations.
This course provides a basic introduction into drafting and the AutoCAD system. Students are provided with information concerning basic drawings from the drafting industry. Introduction to hardware, software, configuration, and file information management specific to Windows-based AutoCAD will also be covered. Through the semester, students will learn hands-on, the majority of drawing and editing commands and procedures necessary to complete basic 2D working drawings.5 Credits


COMPUTER ASSISTED DRAFTING B (Advanced CAD) Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Grade "C" or better in CAD A, Drafting IB and Drafting IIA.
Students in this specialized course will pursue drawing techniques that are currently used in industry and will expand on special individual interests developed in Drafting IB and Drafting IIA. Students will develop their drawings in a three dimensional platform. 5 Credits


DRAFTING 1 B (Mechanical) Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Grade "C" or better in CAD A or permission of instructor.
This course provides a background into mechanical, two-dimensional (orthographic projection) multi-view drawings of parts used in manufacturing, and more in-depth commands for the AutoCAD system. Through the semester, students will learn procedures necessary to complete basic 2D and isometric mechanical drawings, along with blocks, attributes and AutoCAD system variables for improved user efficiency.5 Credits


DRAFTING 2 A (Architectural) Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Grade "B" or better in CAD A and Drafting IB or permission of instructor.
This course provides background into architectural drafting and new, more in-depth commands for the AutoCAD system. Through the semester students will learn procedures necessary to complete basic 2D and isometric architectural drawings (floor, foundation, and electrical plans, door and window schedules, elevations, and pictorial representations), along with blocks, attributes and AutoCAD system variables for improved user efficiency.5 Credits


GRAPHIC ARTS 1 A (Silk Screen) Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: No prerequisites
This course is designed to teach students the introductory techniques of printing using screen printing procedures, including printing on T-shirts and other imprintable textile materials. The course strongly emphasizes basic math skills, measurement, die sublimation printing, soft pad printing, and various computer software technologies. Programs such as Adobe Creative Suite (CS) with In-Design 3.0, Photoshop 8.0, and Illustrator 10.0 will be used to complete student projects during class. A lab fee of $25.00 may be required. 5 Credits

GRAPHIC ARTS II A (Advanced Screen Printing) Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Completion of Graphic Arts I A
This course is designed to teach students the advanced techniques of printing using screen printing procedures, including multi-color (up to eight colors) printing on T-shirts and other imprintable textile materials. The course continues to emphasize basic math skills, measurement, die sub limation printing, soft pad printing, and various computer software technologies. Programs such as Adobe Creative Suite (CS) with In-Design 3.0, ,Photoshop 8.0, and Illustrator 10.0 will continue to be used to complete student and district projects during class. A lab fee of $25.00 may be required. 5- 40 Credits


GRAPHIC ARTS 1 B (Print Shop) Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: No prerequisites
This course is designed to help prepare students in careers associated with print communication. It provides hands-on training in operating various equipment and technology. Students will be introduced to and instructed in Adobe Photoshop 8.0, Adobe Illustrator 10.0, Adobe In-Design 3.0, history of communication, advertising, terminology, flatbed scanner use, color theory, cutting, design, printing, and bindery operations. Students will create: several logos, symbols, illustrations, business cards and memo pads to take home. Students in the class may be expected to activelparticipate in printing projects for school and district use. A lab fee of $25.00 may be required for this class.5-20 Credits


GRAPHIC ARTS II B (Advanced Offset Print Shop) Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Completion of Graphic Arts IB
This course offers students business experience within the printing industry. All students will assist and be responsible for different jobs associated with school and district printing. Such jobs are: prepress, printing, bindery, maintaining files, creating artwork, design, maintenance, deliveries, communication with teachers and administration, handling phone calls, accounting, etc. Some of the main projects students will be producing/printing every year are: School Registration Guide, Couse Catalog, school newsletters, Post High School Planning Guide, graduation tickets, program covers, and business cards. They will be responsible for deadlines and working with others as a critical skill to successful business operation.

HOME PAGE PRODUCTION Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Keyboarding or Tech Foundations
This course will focus on three areas: HTML, web design, and web production. Students will learn to use the web as well as how to design web pages. Topics include browsers, search engines, HTML, frames, tables, links, forms, and layout. 5 Credits

PROJECT LEAD THE WAY (Gateway to Technology) Grades 9-12
Prerequisite:
The Project Lead The Way High School Program is a four year sequence of courses which, when combined with traditional mathematics and science, introduces students to the scope, rigor and discipline of engineering prior to entering college. However, those not intending to pursue further formal education will benefit greatly from the knowledge and logical thought processes that result from taking some or all of the courses provided in the curriculum.5 credits


JOURNALISM Grades 9-12 (Meets fine art or practical art requirement)
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation or course teacher approval
This course is designed to expose students to the journalistic skills of writing, editing, layout design, and photography. Extra time is required outside of the scheduled class period in order to meet deadlines for publication.5 Credits


FOODS AND NUTRITION 1A Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: No prerequisites
In this one semester course, students will learn fundamental skills and knowledge for preparing, planning and evaluating various foods within each section of the food pyramid. Students will become familiar with how to balance a diet, how to serve food in an attractive manner, and how to maintain a sanitary work environment. The class fulfills the practical arts requirement for graduation. A contribution of $20 is appreciated for foods consumed during class time. 5 Credits


FOODS AND NUTRITION 1B Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: A grade of "C" or better in Foods and Nutrition 1A or permission of instructor.
This one semester course continues the basic foods class to a more in-depth study of food and its relationship to our body. Food science and nutrition will be the primary thrust of the curriculum. Students will prepare and serve more creative and difficult recipes. A contribution of $20 is appreciated for foods consumed during class time. 5 Credits


VIDEO PRODUCTION 1A Grades 9-12
UC/CSU Approved
Prerequisites: No prerequisites
This course provides a basic understanding of all the aspects of the film and television industry as well as learning how to produce videos. Students will be trained in the use of cameras, editing equipment, script writing, story boarding, and how to do voice-overs. Students will learn the basic steps involved in producing their own videos as they use the equipment to produce commercials, public service announcement, movies, and music videos. A contribution of $10 is appreciated for personal project items. 5 credits

VIDEO PRODUCTION 1B Grades 9-12
UC/CSU Approved
Prerequisite: Completion of Video 1A with a passing grade.
Students will learn the more advanced techniques of video production in preparation for career placement. Students will continue to work in small groups to enhance their skills in producing longer and more elaborate projects including instructional videos, public service announcements, and feature stories for entry into local and national video contests. A contribution of $15 is appreciated for personal project items. This course is a requirement for the Television Production Career Path. 5 credits


VIDEO PRODUCTION 2 A/B
Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Completion of Video 1B with a passing grade.
Video Production 2A/B is a hands-on course for the movie maker. Students will be working on larger scale videos and mini-films as well as advancing their knowledge of non-linear editing on industry standard editing programs. Students will be expected to plan, write, shoot, score, and edit a 10-15 minute film, as well as produce school related feature stories to be broadcast on GVTV, the daily morning news program. A contribution of $15 is appreciated for personal project items. This course is a requirement for the Television Production Career Path.5 credits


TELEVISION PRODUCTION 1A/B - 2A/B Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Video 1A / 1B and teacher’s permission.
Television Production provides students with a variety of real-world learning opportunities through the production of a daily live television show. Writing, producing, performance, photography, editing, and studio operations will be stressed. Students create video projects both individually and in groups for GVTV, the morning news program, including news stories, commercials, public service announcements, and promotional videos. Students demonstrate leadership, citizenship, work ethics, cooperative attitudes, and social skills through participation in classroom and community activities. Students will also be required to cover various outside-of-class school events. A contribution of $15 is appreciated for personal project items. This course is a requirement for the Television Production Career Path. 5 credits
