Staff, Students Thanked for Outstanding Scores
Hart District students continue to make gains in STAR scores and rank well above their peers across the county and the state, prompting the Governing Board to express its thanks to staff and students whose work produced the outstanding results. While standardized tests are only one part of the assessment picture, they are an important part of the district’s state Academic Performance Index and the federal Adequate Yearly Progress, both considered an important “report card” of school performance. Those scores will be released in early September. Students will be receiving their individual test results through the mail over the next few weeks, and schools are already discussing their successes and areas in which they can improve. District schools did very well in English/language arts this year, and increased the number of junior high school students who moved up to algebra.

Investigations Proceeding on Castaic Site
Three consultants hired to conduct environmental and geotechnical studies on the chosen Romero Canyon site for a high school in Castaic are proceeding on schedule. The Planning Center, hired to prepare an Environmental Impact Report, is well underway with their initial research and studies on new and existing data of the site. The district has already achieved a $25,000 savings on the initial contract price by eliminating redundancies and taking advantage of data already gathered. GeoLabs has completed 75 percent of the borings required to investigate potential landslides and other geologic features on the site. A full report of their findings will be available once the field and laboratory data have been analyzed. The third consultant (RMA) is conducting a peer review of GeoLabs’ work.

Academic Honesty Policy Updated
The Governing Board passed a revision of Policy 5131.9, updating academic policies to reflect Internet and other electronic usage. A new Administrative Regulation also has been added, providing district-level support to procedures already in place at local schools. The Board noted that plagiarism is a growing issue because of the expanding source of information available on the Internet.

Hart District Supports Enterprise Zone Expansion
Responding to the importance of creating new jobs, the Governing Board passed a resolution in support of an application by the City of Santa Clarita to expand the Santa Clarita Enterprise Zone. Purpose of the Enterprise Zone is to stimulate business and industrial growth, help attract businesses, help retain and expand business and industry, and create increased job opportunities. Expansion of the current Enterprise Zone is expected to benefit the Hart District through increased tax revenues and the additional income driven by student enrollment.

Strategic Plan Progress Report Postponed
A progress report on the district’s Strategic Plan was tabled until the Governing Board’s joint meeting with the College of the Canyons Board, scheduled for Sept. 22. At least a portion of the Hart District’s plan involves its interaction with the local community college, making the joint meeting an appropriate venue for the report.
