Hart District Receives $45,750 To Serve Homeless Students Print
Thursday, 09 July 2009 09:08
The William S. Hart Union High School District has been notified that it will receive $45,750 in one-time supplemental funds to assist homeless students in the district. The grant is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and is designated for districts and county offices of education that have already been approved for McKinney-Vento funds for homeless students.

The Hart District applied for and has been approved for $70,000 a year for the next four years under the McKinney-Vento act, and the recently announced one-time funds are in addition to those ongoing grants. The local school district served more than 850 homeless students in grades seven through 12 in the 2008-09 school year, according to the district's Consolidated Application form.

Grant funds are used for such items as bus passes, backpacks filled with school supplies, and other educational supplies which are not already provided free of charge by the school district. The Hart District collaborates with other school districts and service agencies to be sure that items purchased with the grant funds do not duplicate services provided by others.

The number of homeless students served by the Hart District has increased markedly in recent years. The district works to connect its homeless families with other agencies which can provide services that the Hart District cannot.
