Foothill League Athletic Eligibility Transfer Policy Print
Monday, 02 July 2012 08:38
A student who transfers from one comprehensive high school to another comprehensive high school, within the Foothill League, without a valid change of residence may have varsity eligibility for fall, winter, and spring sports at the new school of attendance, provided that the transfer request is received by the District prior to the close of the work day on July 31.  Approval of the transfer does NOT, in and of itself, ensure athletic eligibility.

In all cases, when a student has transferred without a valid change of residence, the student will be restricted from varsity competition for a designated sit-out period, or "SOP", in each season of sport that the student participated in at the  previous school.  (The SOP for each season of sport is listed at the end of this bulletin.  See also the CIF Blue Book, Rule 207, Transfer Eligiblity).  Any student who makes a transfer request after July 31 of the current school year will be ineligible for varsity competition in each sport he/she participated in at the previous Foothill League School for the remainder of that school year.

Any student who transfers from one comprehensive high school to another comprehensive high school within the Foothill League with a valid change of residence will have varsity eligibililty after the SOP restriction in each season of sport he or she participated in at the previous school.

A student who transfers from a non-Foothill League school may have varsity eligibility at the new school of attendance, after the SOP.  If the non-Foothill League student requests a transfer to a Foothill League school other than that which he/she resides and the transfer is approved, the student will be ineligible for varsity competition for one year.

A student who transfers from one comprehensive high school to another comprehensive high school in the Foothill League, with or without a valid change of residence, may have immediate eligibility in lower level (non-varsity) athletics.  If the student participates in lower level athletics, he/she is not eligible to participate in varsity athletics for the remainder of the season, including any playoff games.

30 Day Sit Out Period Dates
CIF Rule 207 - A student who transfers without making a valid change of residence, is not eligible for varsity competition, in any sport the student participated in at his/her previous school during the last 12 calendar months, until the following dates:
  • Fall - October 1
  • Winter - December 31
  • Spring - April 1
