More than 400 students, from 12 Hart District junior high and high schools and Castaic Middle School, participated in the DFYIT Youth Summit last week to participate in team building activities, listen to guest speakers and strategize on ways to encourage their peers to participate in the Drug Free Youth In Town (DFYIT) program launched in September at each school.

The Hart School District is proud to announce that the Governing Board officially adopted lacrosse as a high school sport during the October 17, 2012 regular meeting. Lacrosse will be instituted at West Ranch High School as a financially self-sustaining interscholastic sport.

Hispanic students throughout the Hart School District are invited to attend a college night hosted by Golden Valley High School on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 from 5 to 8 pm, in the school's theater. The event starts at 5 pm with a tamale and Latin pastry sale and continues with a welcome and raffle at 6 pm and two workshops starting at 6:30 pm. The workshops will be conducted in English and Spanish.

The Hart School District Governing Board is seeking applications to fill three vacancies on the Citizen's Oversight Committee formed to review expenditures of Measure V school bond funds. One member should be a senior citizen, others will be members at large.

The California Department of Education has released its Accountability Progress Report, today. This year, the Hart District's API score of 838 is an increase of 8 points from last year's score and places it as a leader in the state among similar union high school districts. The district's outstanding API score is the result of efforts by teachers, staff and administrators at all district schools. The report lists the performance of California public schools based on two accountability systems, the state's Academic Performance Index (API) and the federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).
