If you are the parent of a 7th grader who fails a class or who scored Far Below Basic on the STAR test, you will soon be called to schedule an AB 1802 conference. Counselors will provide students with information on all educational and vocational options available to them and provide specified services to students who have failed or are at risk of failing the California High School Exit Examination, as well as students who are at risk of not graduating due to insufficient credits.
The bill calls for individual conferences with students at-risk (and a parent or guardian) to discuss the student’s status, with a focus on identifying possible solutions to the barriers the student faces. During the individual conference, the school counselor shall apprise the pupil and his or her parent or guardian of the following:
- The pupil's scores on the language arts and mathematics portion of the grade 6 STAR Test.
- Consequences of not passing the California High School Exit Examination.
- Programs and courses available for satisfactory completion of middle school.
- Cumulative records and transcripts of the pupil.
- Remediation strategies, high school courses, and alternative education options.
- Information on postsecondary education and training.
