Established by Senate Bill 376 in 1997, the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program requires that all public school districts in California use a single standardized test, designated by the State Board of Education to test each student in grades 2 through 11. This test evaluates individual and group achievement, helps educators plan instruction, and provides comparisons to a national normative group. It is especially important for your child to do well on these tests because scores will be used to determine placement in 7th grade Enriched English and Enriched Pre-algebra and in 8th grade Enriched English and Algebra. Students must score at least 90 percentile or better on the Language Arts and/or Mathematics subtests to enroll in our enriched classes. STAR testing results may also be used for 9th grade placement. During the summer, you will receive a detailed report of your child's results on the twelve tests. Group results by grade level for each school, district, county, and the state will be posted on the Internet no later than June 30. Please help your child to see the test as an opportunity to show what he/she has learned and encourage him/her to perform his/her very best. Be sure that your child understands that the scores on this test are part of his/her permanent school record. We really need your help during this testing time. Teachers have been preparing students for the test and have been giving them test-taking strategies. Students will be taking these tests under the most optimum testing conditions, so we will keep classroom interruptions to a minimum. We believe that our students can reach their full potential when we tell them they are capable and that we care about what they accomplish. We appreciate your assistance in this matter. matter.
