Department Philosophy

A lifestyle that includes daily exercise is excellent “health insurance”.  Most medical authorities support the belief that exercise helps a person look, feel and work better.  The Placerita Junior High Physical Education staff agrees with this view and encourages lifelong fitness within our curriculum.  It is our hope that by emphasizing the importance of exercise, a value can be learned for adulthood and leisure time.  The personal health habits of today will help shape the health and fitness of tomorrow for our students.

The Placerita Physical Education program features a well-rounded introduction to a variety of sports skills, fitness activities, and cooperative games.  Students are taught a progression of skills, rules, and strategies as well as sportsmanship and cooperation.  During the year, every class covers 7 to 8 activities, each lasting 4 to 5 weeks.  These activities may include: basketball, flag football, fitness, weight training, tennis, dance (square, folk, line, salsa, cha-cha), frisbee golf, soccer, volley-tennis, volleyball, and softball.

Our department also emphasizes fitness for life, while taking our classes into a classroom setting.  Lecture, videos, worksheets and cooperative learning are a few of the strategies that are used.  Nutrition, muscular strength, cardiovascular fitness, and fitness planning are some of the topics to be covered.
