For Kris Floyd, her love of her alma mater never died.
In fact, after graduating from Saugus High School in 1984 and leaving the Santa Clarita Valley for a six-year stint in Palm Springs, she and her husband returned, determined to raise their children in the school district.
Today, two of Floyd's children attend Saugus High, one of who participates in the school's House of Representatives, a committee her mom was involved in when she was a student more than 20 years ago.
Now that her children are in school, Floyd has made an effort to stay involved in their activities in one way or another.
That is why she decided to start planning, along with other Saugus graduates, an event to commemorate the alumni of the campus.
As the president of the Saugus High School Foundation, Floyd headed the planning of a special homecoming game Friday for the alumni of Saugus High School.
The former Centurions will be invited to the school's homecoming rally, followed by a tour of the new, improved campus. The football team will play against Golden Valley High School Friday night.
And later that evening, alumni and their families will get to catch up at a barbecue.
Floyd said the event and others like it will hopefully attract other past students, many of whom are now parents, back to help out at the school in the foundation, which includes an alumni association.
When Floyd became interested in forming the alumni association, she said Principal Bill Bolde told her that so far, no one else had expressed interest.
That is when Floyd decided to take on the project herself, starting by contacting friends through e-mail or telephone and keeping them updated on what was going on at Saugus.
Her friends began contacting their friends and soon the association boasted more than 1,000 members in its database.
"It just started blossoming from there. I thought, 'Why don't we do anything big for the alumni?' I remember seeing the alumni at my games and being so excited to see them come," said the mother of three.
Since the campus has been under renovation, a "Legacy Wall" is also under construction, on which alumni will be able to place their names on stones that will be displayed for future students to see.
Those who attend Friday's festivities will get to buy buttons and ribbons displaying their Centurion pride. Last year, alumni were invited to celebrate the school's 30-year anniversary.
For Floyd, whose husband is an alumni of Hart High School, the whole family will be able to get into the school spirit.
"It's really quite wonderful now, he's into all things Saugus now. He's even got a sticker on his car that says 'Hart Grad, Saugus Dad,'" said Floyd of her husband Randy.
The Homecoming Rally begins at 10 a.m. inside the Saugus gym, followed by a tour of the remodeled campus. Between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., the barbecue will be held in the parking lot at College of the Canyons. Tickets for the meals will be $5 and alumni can buy tickets for their family for $10.
