ELA (English) CAHSEE Practice Test

Read the following essays about two high school students and then answer questions 1 through 4.

Kris

My name is Kris. I've been performing ballet in front of audiences for thirteen years. I won't be performing this Saturday and my heart is broken. I love to perform! There is no better feeling than flying poetically around the stage to heavenly classical music. Performing skillful lifts and leaps to the plaudits of the audience is the most glorious feeling in the world. This Saturday, if I choose to attend, I will be a part of the audience. But I don't know if I can sit idly in the audience and simply watch. It will prove very difficult.

I can't perform because I have a bruised hand and torn ligaments in my knee. I am hobbling around school on crutches and wondering when I can dance again. The urge is physically painful. My classmates do not understand my passion. They think it odd that I am willing to spend countless hours each week in the studio, but it is my life. I even teach some of the smaller children now and wonder if I was as awkward when I first began.

I don't think I was awkward. Ballet has always come naturally to me. However, because of my love for ballet, I have been forced to withstand the ridicule of those who do not understand my passion for dance. There are those who call me names and mock my sport. If only they would allow themselves to overcome the peer pressure and try ballet, they might find it as invigorating as I do. Peer pressure is a horrible thing.

My name is Kris - Kristopher. I am not dancing on Saturday because I was injured in a fight at school. Three boys decided that I was worth beating up because I dance ballet. I hope they are as miserable right now as I am, but I doubt it. If ignorance is bliss, they are three happy boys

Max

My name is Max. I've been studying the martial arts since I was five. I am now sixteen and have earned my brown belt in Kokushinkai Karate. I am supposed to be testing for my black belt this Saturday but I am not sure if it is something that I should do right now. Through martial arts, I have learned discipline, respect and strength - both inner and outer. It is the inner strength that I must call upon if I am to attend Saturday's promotion ceremony.

I'm not sure whether or not I want to obtain my black belt because my friends at school do not understand my commitment and passion. They think it strange that I spend up to twenty hours per week in the dojo learning, assisting, and teaching. It is fun to teach the little kids. There is one five-year-old who reminds me of me when I began my first lessons. I watch the fire in the eyes of that child and look in the mirror for my own spark. Is it gone?

It is there. It is simply dulled. Dulled by those who choose to ridicule the unknown. Dulled through peer pressure to give up something for which I have a passion. I am sixteen and I have never been on a date. The rumors around school are that I am too tough and too dangerous to date. If my classmates were to understand the martial arts, they would know that I would never use my skills unless absolutely necessary. There is one person who wants to date me, but refuses to date a black belt-someone who can "kick their butt."

I am Max - Maxine. I want to achieve my goals, but would like to also have a social life. I would make a great date. If ignorance is bliss, then there are a lot of happy boys at my school.

A. ballet is a poetic sport.

D. teaching is a learning experience.

"Performing skillful lifts and leaps to the plaudits of the audience is the most glorious feeling in the world."
