Early College High School?
Santa Clarita Valley ECHS is a new approach in helping underserved youth realize their academic potential. Santa Clarita Valley ECHS is a school that:
- Provides the rigor, depth and intensity of college-level work in high school;
- Inspires average, underachieving and well-prepared high school students to work hard and stretch themselves intellectually;
- Removes barriers to postsecondary access;
- Incorporates an incentive system rewarding performance with access to college-level courses;
- Maintains limited enrollment to ensure each individual student receives personalized attention to ensure academic success;
- Eases the physical transition between high school and college;
- Saves money and time by integrating high school and college-level work; and
- Provides young people with guidance and coaching from adults through the first two years of college.
It makes sense to
integrate
high school and college.
Each early college high school works closely with a local college or university. Santa Clarita Valley ECHS has partnered with College of the Canyons to create a unique academic experience that cannot be replicated at a comprehensive high school. This partnership introduces students to the resources, rigor, and intensity of college-level academics during a student’s high school experience.
There are several benefits of
early experiences with college courses.
- Early exposure to college-level courses eases the transition to college and should reduce the number of remedial classes needed once enrolled in college.
- All students have the opportunity to complete two years of college by graduation, ensuring college-readiness and reducing the cost of higher education.
- Completed courses can be translated into an Associate’s degree or applied toward a Bachelor’s degree.
