Workshop Feedback

We are so appreciative of the time you spend filling out our Family Workshop Evaluation. Here's a place to find responses to those questions and suggestions you write to us at the bottom:

From the SV Writes Workshop 10/28

Parent: I would like to know when the workshops for science, history and math will take place?

Family Resource Program: Great! We want to see you again! Here's a list of the upcoming workshops:
Science Workshop, Nov. 18
History Workshop, Feb. 3
Math Workshop, March 10

From the SV Reads Workshop 10/14

Parent: I liked the exercise with the interacting reading questions, however, I would have liked for a group of students to show the audience how to do the activity from start to finish and give examples of how they came up with their responses.

Family Resource Program: Great idea! Thank you for taking the time to write this all down! We will be putting this into our presentation notes for next year's workshop. If you still would like further information, please contact your student's English teacher.

Parent: It may be helpful to let the parents and students to connect and show them why it is important to read.

FRP: Definitely. We had a couple slides in the SV Reads workshop powerpoint that showed what can happen if reading skills aren't developed. I'll post some facts here for future reference.

Parent: What is being done to motivate and encourage students in the classroom? Are there reading materials that relate to student's culture and interests? SRC [summer reading] was a book on Medieval Europe; although a nice book, it was a total disconnect between student and culture.

FRP: Thanks for sharing your perspective. What our English teachers do to motivate students to read will vary from classroom to classroom. Be assured that reading is a focus we all take seriously, and we'd like to encourage all our students to enjoy this essential skill.

To find a book that more closely relates to a student's culture or interests, a quick visit to our SV Library could do the trick. Mrs. Fulleman is a wonderful resource of current young adult literature. Additonally, the OPEC computer in the library can do searches based on any keyword a student types in. (The titles for seventh grade summer reading were selected based on their connection with the seventh grade history curriculum.)
