Sierra Vista Junior High
Physical Education
Dear Parents & Students,
Physical Education at Sierra Vista Jr. High School has changed forever. For most of us, the old-style PE met the needs of a select few. Everyone else was often left with a lifetime of bad memories and demeaning experiences. Today, the “New PE” classes are about developing a healthy lifestyle and wellness. Providing a quality physical education experience for students is truly a team effort. It involves a tremendous commitment from our superintendent, Jaime Castellanos, our principal, Mark Crawford, our PE Staff, students and parents in our community. This support, along with expert mentoring by the 2006 recipient of the “Heroes of the Movement” Award and CEO of HopSports, Tom Root, has provided us the vision to constantly pursue for futuristic and cutting edge best practices. Due to the modeling of the “New PE”, we have been recognized by the President's Council on Physical Fitness/Sports and the President's Challenge on becoming a Physical Activity/Fitness Demonstration Center for the Nation.
What is the “New PE”? It means teaching fitness over sports skills in physical education classes. More importantly, it is about objective measurement over subjective grading. By adding technology to our “New PE” Curriculum, teachers will be able to individualize physical education according to each student’s health and fitness levels. Thus being able to create a total health portfolio, while creating a more valuable physical educational experience. Several key improvements have been made to our PE curriculum to help teach students the need to invest in themselves in order to see results for their efforts. Our weekly schedule is designed by having 2 days devoted to team/individual sport activities, 1 day devoted to a cardiovascular run/walk using heart rate monitors/pedometers, 1 day devoted to the HopSports Training Program and 1 day devoted using the Fitness Center. Fitness Testing occurs 3 times a year: Pre-Test, Mid-Test and Post-Test for all grade levels. This will help teachers, students and parents to analyse the summaries of fitness assessments of a students’ progress in their fitness levels
A fresh focus on fitness has given us new approaches in tackling the childhood obesity epidemic.
Every year, for the last 6 years, Sierra Vista’s Fitness Test Scores have improved and our State
Fitness Test scores are one of the highest test scores in the State.
As part of our effort to encourage physical fitness, we have transformed our Old Gym into a state of the art Fitness Center that includes: DDR platforms, XaviX program, V-Cycling Virtual Reality Theater, Circuit Training weight equipment, Rock Climbing Wall, Spin Bikes, water rowing machines and a computer Fitness Lab.
