Multi Tiered System of Support (MTSS)
MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered System of Support, which is an educational framework designed to provide academic and behavioral support to students in schools. MTSS is a comprehensive approach that aims to identify and address the individual needs of all students through a multi-tiered system of interventions.
The key components of MTSS typically include:
Universal or Tier 1 Support: This is the foundational level of support provided to all students. It includes evidence-based instructional practices and strategies that are implemented in the general education setting. These practices are designed to meet the needs of the majority of students.
Targeted or Tier 2 Support: This level of support is provided to students who require additional assistance beyond the universal level. It involves targeted interventions that are more focused and individualized, often provided in small groups or through specific programs. These interventions aim to address specific skill deficits or challenges that students may be facing.
Intensive or Tier 3 Support: This is the highest level of support within the MTSS framework. It is provided to a small percentage of students who require intensive and individualized interventions. Students at this level typically have significant academic or behavioral challenges that have not been effectively addressed through previous levels of support. Interventions at this tier are highly individualized and may involve more specialized resources or personnel.
The MTSS framework is based on a data-driven decision-making process. Schools collect and analyze data on student performance to identify students who may require additional support and to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. This data can include academic assessments, behavioral observations, and other relevant information.
The goal of MTSS is to ensure that all students receive the support they need to succeed academically and socially. By providing a continuum of support that is responsive to individual student needs, MTSS aims to prevent academic and behavioral difficulties, identify and address challenges early on, and improve overall student outcomes.
How does MTSS support the William S. Hart Union High School District Strategic Plan?
MTSS aligns with the district's strategic plan for all students to be Opportunity Ready. The MTSS framework is designed to address the diverse needs of students and provide them with the necessary support and resources to succeed academically, behaviorally, and socially.
By implementing MTSS, the Hart District can create a systematic and comprehensive approach to ensure that every student has equitable access to high-quality education and the opportunity to reach their full potential. The multi-tiered system allows for early identification of students who may be struggling and provides targeted interventions to address their specific needs.
The following focus areas of the district's strategic plan are addressed with MTSS:
- Student Learning & Instruction
- Safety & Wellness
- Access & Equity
- Communication & Collaboration
