Hello! At the William S. Hart Union High School District we take cyber security very seriously. That’s why we are implementing Multi-Factor Authentication.

Some of you may already know it by the acronym MFA or alternatively 2FA or 2SV. But many may be asking what is Multi-Factor Authentication?

Multi-Factor Authentication or MFA is a method that requires users to provide two or more verification factors in order to gain access to an account. This provides extra security for accounts that have rights to sensitive and/or confidential data. This practice is very common for highly sensitive accounts, in fact, you may already have MFA set up for your personal banking, shopping, or healthcare logins.

Why do we need MFA?

An overwhelming number of security breaches today involve compromised usernames and passwords. MFA strengthens the security of your account by using a secondary device that you keep on your person, like an app on your mobile phone or authentication key, to verify your identity.

This prevents anyone but you from accessing your account, even if they know your password. Enabling MFA greatly reduces the chances of someone accessing or sending unauthorized messages from your email account and/or accessing documents and other data you have saved.

In recent years, schools have been specifically targeted for cyber attacks. According to an independent study, 56% of K-12 schools and 64% of colleges and universities have reported being the target of a cyber attack in the past year. This trend has led to the underwriters of cyber liability insurance policies to require all staff be enrolled in MFA in order to provide coverage. And these policies are critical to the recovery efforts from an attack.
