Hi everyone! It's Ellen again, you might have seen me last semester talking about mental health with the rest of my friends. Now we are focusing on Black History Month. We've heard of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks' great achievements but let's shed some light on some other individuals that have contributed to Black History. Cicely Tyson was an activist, actress, and fashion model. She was born December 19th 1924 in Harlem, New York. Cicely Tyson was most known for her roles portraying strong black women who have many impacts on society. She was discovered by a fashion editor for Ebony Magazine and with her stunning looks she quickly rose to the top of the modeling industry. In 1957, she began acting an Off-Broadway productions. In 1959 Cicely Tyson made her Hollywood debut in the film "Odds Against Tomorrow" She went on to play in some of the most revered television series and movies such as "Roots", "Sounder", and "King" Miss Tyson would shatter stereotypes during her career by refusing to portray characters such as drug addicts or any other characters that she believed was demeaning to black women. After Martin Luther King Jr.'s assasination she co-founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem. After a school board in East Orange, New Jersey wanted to name a performing arts school after her, she only agreed to accept the honor if she could participate in school activities. In addition to attending the meetings and events, Tyson even taught a Master Class at the school. In addition to her Screen Actor Guild Award, Emmy Awards, and her Black Reel Awards, Tyson has received several other honors like in 1977 she was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. In 1982 Cicely was awarded in the Women in Film Crystal Award. This award is given to outstanding women who have helped to expand the role of women within the entertainment industry and in 1977 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in November of 2016. Then late last month, on January 28, 2021 Cicely Tyson passed away at the age of Ninety-Six. Her legacy will live on forever due to her outstanding achievements and contributions that paved the way for todays' modern black actors.
